Why the overnight rate does not cover a full charge

This is the part most charging calculators get wrong, and it is worth understanding before you switch tariff. Intelligent Octopus Go gives you 6 hours of cheap electricity between 23:30 and 05:30. At 7 kW that window can deliver about 42 kWh.

A full charge needs 67.9 kWh and 9 h 42 min. Even a 10% to 80% top-up needs 47.53 kWh, which is more than the window holds. Assume the whole session runs at £0.08/kWh and you will underestimate the bill by roughly a quarter.

Rapid charging

BYD publishes one verified interval: 30% to 80% in 29 minutes verified. That works out at an average of about 62.6 kW, well under the 88 kW headline figure. Peak power is held briefly at low state of charge and tapers from there, so any tool that divides battery size by 88 kW will tell you the car charges faster than it does.

Dividing 60.48 kWh by 7 kW gives 8 h 39 min, but that ignores conversion and thermal losses. BYD's own figure is 9 h 42 min, which implies about 11% of the electricity you pay for never reaches the battery.
